CHARACTER NAME: Momo
CANON: IDOLiSH7
CANON POINT: End of Part 4
AGE: 26 (canon materials still list him as 25, but his birthday should've passed just prior to the end of Part 4).
HISTORY:
-Growing up, Momo has firm aspirations of becoming a pro soccer player. However, a brutal injury during a game when he's around 17 means he has to stop playing for a year, sending these plans off-track and dropping him into a mental fugue state. Seeing his condition even after physical recovery, his sister invites him to see her favourite idol duo, Re:vale, and their music reaches Momo's heart and helps him get back on his feet.
-After defending Re:vale against a stage invasion during one of their lives, Momo starts working as a stagehand for them. About a year later, Banri, the older of the duo, is hospitalised after a stage light falls on him mid-show, and soon disappears to protect the younger member, Yuki, from someone trying to take advantage of the situation to control him. Momo seeks out Yuki during this time and, after a month of begging, manages to convince him not to quit singing now that Banri is gone.
-On the promise that Momo won't work with Yuki longer than Banri did (5 years), they team up and become the new Re:vale, intending to track Banri down. Due to the circumstances surrounding his entry into the entertainment industry, Momo's sister rejects him and his parents make it clear they distrust Yuki and don't believe he'll succeed - Momo cuts contact with his family out of guilt, leaving he and Yuki with nobody but each other as they start out on the road to fame.
-Over the initial five years Momo partners with Yuki, he works himself to the bone to ensure they succeed, changing as a person and having to become more calculating and shrewd to keep two steps ahead of the cutthroat industry, while also trying to ensure Yuki doesn't have to engage in anything unsavoury or be "tainted" by it in the same way. In that time, he begins to subconsciously resent Yuki's focus on Banri, and more "selfishly" want to stay performing with Yuki, despite still considering himself merely a replacement. This comes to a climax in Momo's introductory arc during Part 2 of the game story, as the stress of hiding his feelings from Yuki and thinking he'll throw Momo away at his rapidly approaching "expiry date" causes him to lose his singing voice.
-As Re:vale's 5th anniversary approaches (which will end Momo's career anyway if he can't sing at the concert), Momo's juniors in the idol groups IDOLiSH7 and TRIGGER manage to convince him to spill his history and admit his fears of being abandoned in a way Yuki overhears accidentally. Realising Momo still believes Yuki doesn't truly care about him, his juniors arrange a "prank" which results in Yuki almost brutalising one of them over thinking he was harming Momo, showing in his rage how deeply important Momo is to him. Combined with Banri's return (as he'd been employed soon after his "disappearance" by the production company that manages IDOLiSH7) and support of the current Re:vale, Momo regains his singing voice just in time for the anniversary concert.
-At the start of Part 3, one of the two major production companies that used to have a total stranglehold on the entertainment industry, Tsukumo Productions, is taken over by the sadistic youngest son, Ryou Tsukumo. Momo had been "friends" with Ryou for some time before this, and knowing the damage Ryou will do in a position of power, tries to talk him out of taking the role. He fails in that, but manages to outplay Ryou's scheme to destroy IDOLiSH7 with a scandal, and later he and Yuki decide to take revenge for his kidnapping and ruining of TRIGGER's careers by unionising the industry against him so they can safely dethrone him from his position and potentially have him arrested.
-While Momo and Yuki's unionising efforts start off fine, they must continue to outplay Ryou's career-destroying plans, which becomes riskier as Ryou gets angrier at being outsmarted. Upon discovering one of his own idols, Touma, warning Momo about one of his plans, Ryou decides Momo needs to disappear before he can get anything done, and he calls in underworld associates he's worked with previously to capture Momo inside his apartment, intending to murder him in a way that looks like an accident. Ryou leaves them to their work of getting Momo extremely drunk before throwing him off his balcony, but Yuki arrives just in time to interrupt. After a scuffle where Yuki is taken hostage, Ryou encounters Ryuu, one of the members of TRIGGER, out in the city. Upon learning what's happening, he threatens Ryou into calling off the murders (as Ryou was ready to have Yuki killed too), and Yuki and Momo get into a fight over their determination to protect each other.
-Part 4 largely consists of Ryou trying to destroy Re:vale (and break Momo) with scandals, and the matter of Yuki having a previous partner finally reaches the public. Working through guilt and uncertainty (given Ryou finding out about Yuki's past partner in the first place was his fault), Momo finally manages to confidently embrace his role as Yuki's partner, and makes steps to take over as Re:vale's lyricist. He and Yuki confront the media furore late in the arc - making it clear that while they're only human, they'll stay standing strong for anyone who needs their light - and Part 4 ends with their performance at the yearly music competition Black or White, using "t(w)o...", a love song which was written by Momo and composed by Yuki. During Black or White, their efforts against Ryou also bear their fruit, as the previous Tsukumo boss takes over the company again, and Ryou is intercepted and arrested during a last-ditch effort to destroy everyone's lives at Black or White.

VICES & VIRTUES: Vices

-Pride: Momo's pride is an interesting type, probably best described as a tendency to think he knows what's best for the people around him, regardless of how they feel about it. This can be used positively, an example being when Yuki's partner disappeared and Momo visited him persistently for a month to convince him to keep playing music, even though Yuki was frequently lashing out at him and telling him to leave. Momo later describes this as his "ego" because he knew it was imposing his own will and feelings on the situation upon Yuki, but he (and Yuki) don't think of it negatively because it did turn out it was what Yuki needed at the time. However, he also has a tendency to engage in manipulative and controlling behaviour behind people's backs to keep them out of danger without telling them, because a) he thinks he can handle it and they don't need to, and b) even if they do find out about it, he refuses to back down because he wants what's best for their protection. This comes up a number of times in canon, but most strongly in Part 3, when Momo's manager (Okarin) and Yuki become frustrated by Momo dealing with Ryou behind their backs when they all know by that point he's dangerous (and realise that Momo already knew this for a long time, and had been lying to them about how dangerous he was so they wouldn't interfere with Momo's work keeping him on-side).
While Momo struggles with personal pride at times, he can get swallowed up in the pride he attaches to those he associates with and let it get out of control. In canon, this frequently involves Yuki or Banri, such as insisting his juniors (who Banri now works with) don't "own" Banri (disregarding their strong relationship with him) since Momo still treats him as an idol and feels proud of the strong, longstanding relationship he's had with Re:vale as a fan - and then becoming very hurt when Banri himself says he's incorrect.

-Lust: There's some overlap with greed here, but Momo's strong desires tend to focus on people, and particularly in current canon tend to simply take the form of "want" rather than "wanting more". The majority of this in canon regards Yuki, as Momo's feelings tended overall more towards chastity (pure, deep love for his sport, where any "want" was to be sought as a team, and then later a pure love for Re:vale and their music) until he started working with Yuki, and slowly realised that Yuki makes him feel want. While there is a more traditional lust aspect there (shown in things like Momo being mentioned to frequently fantasise about keeping Yuki caged), the strongest desire Momo shows towards Yuki in current canon is simply being able to stay together with him. Previously, this overlapped more into greed due to his uncertain position as Banri's replacement and believing that he didn't deserve to be with Yuki, however as of Part 4 he has worked through the worst of these issues. Either way, Momo demonstrates possessive, excessive behaviour over Yuki (which Yuki often reciprocates), which often comes up when they interact with others as things like refusal to be separated except when necessary, or overt jealousy at the idea of someone being closer to their partner than they are.
While rarer, this type of behaviour can also appear with Momo's older juniors, usually tending towards the more traditional definition of lust (such as taking increasingly naked photos of Ryuu, who's very muscular) but sometimes leaning simply towards possessiveness (baulking at the possibility of "his" - in the sense of claiming them - juniors interacting with Ryou because they might get "tainted"). He's also self-described in canon as "weak to hot guys", though he's kept in check to a certain degree by the restrictions of his job.

-Wrath: It's a long-standing and much-observed tendency of Momo's to become violent or at least much more aggressive in defense of his loved ones. He's very much considered an overprotective type, to the point that he's canonically had the nickname "Mad Dog" applied to him (after his first meeting with Yuki and Banri, where he beat 3 people bloody on stage for threatening them), drawing a comparison to an aggressive guard dog. As well as these two, this behaviour has shown up in canon with many other people, including Momo's older sister (in one scene where Momo forgets he has the bath running when she calls him about being followed, because he's busy roaring down the street to fight the person), his manager (saying he'll end up punching Ryou if he keeps insulting Okarin's hair), and his juniors. This can also extend to Momo being willing to commit more lasting harm, as shown in Part 4 where Okarin and Yuki have to talk him down from just walking into Ryou's office with a metal baseball bat when he starts spreading some vicious rumours about Yuki. However, due to his industry, Momo also understands that physical violence is not always the play - he's demonstrated himself very willing to bring people down in different ways if they harm his people, such as his and Yuki's long plot to dethrone Ryou from his position after he targets their juniors. Even in these cases, his anger and desire to see these people take consequences are clear, and he can hold onto grudges quite impressively, particularly if the person in question has dragged Momo's loved ones into things and not simply Momo himself.

Virtues

-Humility: Momo's inability to see his own good points is a recurring issue in canon, implied to have begun in earnest around the time he had to leave competitive soccer due to his injury. Compared to the people he works with, he insistently considers himself an "average guy" even as his juniors are actively telling him that he's so competent at what he does he seems like he has no weaknesses. He picks up new skills extremely quickly, but focuses more on what he can't do than what he can - the most blatant canon example of this is that he had no musical or dance training at all before he joined Re:vale, but they successfully debut within less than a year of teaming up and begin winning awards the following year. However, as Momo is picking up these new skills, he instead focuses on the feeling that he's holding Yuki back due to being comparatively inexperienced. As of his chosen canonpoint, he is starting to get better about this, but it still doesn't take much to knock his confidence, and he still struggles to find much to compliment himself about. Only months prior to this canonpoint, when asked by Banri to brag about himself, his only answer was to go silent and stare at the floor - Yuki had to take over for him, and hearing his compliments was enough to overwhelm Momo to tears. Currently, he has at least accepted that other people see good things in him and want him around, even if he can't see those things himself.
On the brighter side of this, Momo is very good at pumping other people up and singling out their strongest points. When one of his juniors goes through a psychological breakdown in early Part 3, Momo has a heart-to-heart conversation with him that helps to pull him out of absolute rock bottom with the gentle praises and acknowledgement that he needs. He wholeheartedly believes that everyone is special, the hero of their own story, and does his best to help them feel that way.

-Charity: Momo is very giving, supportive and helpful, and aims to use his position to help improve the conditions in the entertainment industry for those coming after him, as he and Yuki had to go through significant struggles (including poverty and toxic industry relationships) to reach where they are. This motivation is shown repeatedly with how he interacts with his juniors in canon, with examples such as taking advantage of Re:vale's set-in-stone industry position to get TRIGGER back on television after Ryou destroys their career and has most in the industry refusing to even mention them. This brought significant risk on Momo and Yuki as it meant Ryou (an incredibly powerful industry figure) would target them, but Momo is particularly ready to risk bearing that and states that it's part of their duty as the leaders in the entertainment industry to create these kinds of opportunities. However, he is also very much the type to try and pour from an empty cup, a prime example being during Part 2 where he's in the midst of a psychological breakdown, yet still helping and supporting his juniors as if nothing is wrong (and not admitting to his problems until it's dragged out of him). He's also been willing to give everything up to and including his life, as shown when he almost dies to protect his juniors and Yuki from Ryou at the end of Part 3. Momo generally considers it his duty to help others if he can, regardless of how much danger it puts him in or how much it makes them worry for him.

-Diligence: Momo's hardworking nature is cited by just about everyone who knows him as one of his greatest strengths. He's always willing to put his nose to the grindstone to learn new skills, forge new connections and earn what he's aiming towards, and has been like this his entire life. However, he also has an unfortunate habit of overdoing it, doing things like texting with industry connections late into the night in order to ensure they'll be there if he needs them - but losing sleep in the process and affecting his health. He's had a number of arguments with Yuki about letting work seep into personal time (particularly when they're together), which is something he has been getting better about, but his initial response is typically to hide how hard he's working from anyone who's worried about it. That said, this diligence has led him to great things, with Re:vale's current success ascribed by Yuki himself to Momo's efforts in forging their connections, pushing Yuki onwards, and not only believing in Re:vale's ability to reach the top but doing all he could to make it a reality.

SUITABILITY: Momo is a very adaptable character who's gone through some radical life changes previously, so he adjusts fairly quickly to the way of life in new settings. He's also the type to be proactive about finding information and getting involved rather than sitting on the sidelines, so once he figures out how things in the city tick, he'll be interested in making himself productive and forming connections with others in the setting.

On a less general level, vices and virtues play very heavily into Momo's character development, particularly his initial difficulty in accepting his virtues and his strong awareness of his vices even while trying to conceal them from others. At the canonpoint I'm taking him from, he has made strong strides on accepting his vices as part of himself and smaller ones towards accepting that he has virtues - I feel a setting like this one that leans heavily on vices and virtues as a theme will have interesting effects on his further development. He'll also be willing to act on both vices and virtues because at this stage, he does accept that his vices aren't necessarily awful, unforgivable things like he used to think, but it's more about how he expresses them and whether he's willing to take responsibility for them.
